Chapter Seventeen: Solid Waste Management and Disposal
Freddie
What is Solid Waste and how is it different from other types of waste? such as air and water waste.
Max: Solid waste can most easily be identified as common things the average person throws away on a daily basis. In most developed countries systems exist where this waste is collected from the public and recycled, sorted, re-used or discarded.
Logan: Solid waste can be defined as a mixture of materials that people dispose of on any given day. This may include food garbage, cans, glass, and plastic. Although, solid waste is usually composed of left over food waste. In New Hampshire, solid waste is thrown away in a garbage system run and funded by the city.
Define the different types of waste below and discuss how the waste and the process that makes them affect the environment?
Mining Waste
Logan: In Alaska, there is a company that is attempting to construct a mine in the middle of the Alaskan Salmon fishery. THis mine, also known as Pebbles mine, if built, will consist of several dump pits where the left over chemicals will be stored. The mine will only last a maximum of fifteen years if the bill to build it is passed. If this happens, then the Alaskan Salmon fishery, which so many people depend on, could be destroyed. The waste pits will not be removed for several decades thus if they flood or are opened, they could effect the salmon ecosystem greatly.
Agricultural Waste
Industrial Solid Waste
Municipal Solid Waste
Compare and contrast modern landfills to incineration and describe the concerns involved with each:
Discuss the two easy ways to reduce the waste that goes into landfills or is incinerated and how they are important:
Composting
Recycling
Why is the plastic water bottle market sometimes considered a "producer created market" and how has it created so much easily avoidable waste?
What is source reduction and why is it the best way to decrease waste?
Come up with one unique way you can reduce the amount of solid waste that you produce, or cause to be produced.
